The advantage is that, as I said earlier, there is no running. Expanding on this point, a player is not defined by their own physical prowess or mental accuity in IoD style LRP - as far as suspension of disbelief goes, and within reason.
Not that I'm judging any truly Action games - they actually seem like a great deal of fun, but they do involve more running than I am used to... I suspect that if IoD helps to develop social skills amongst it's players, then Skully is probably responsible for increased hand-eye coordination and general fitness.
Oh... and we don't roll dice (except on very rare occasions). You draw a card and add your 'dice pool', 10 is 1 success, 15 is 2, etc. Much quicker, and tends to be more realistic in the number of successes gained than tabletop. Though frankly, in the last 10 game sessions, I've probably drawn cards 3 or 4 times at most - though people with auspex and dominate tend to make more draws on average... _________________ Mark Spinks

When I'm running MET I tend to swap card draws for everyone rolling a single D10 (Preferably in a transparent shaker.) Much quicker for mass combats.
Then again when I'm running things Combat tends to crop up more often. _________________ Bayoisms: Crazy things said or done by Bayo Riley's Characters.

Maybe it has something to do with how much you can actually role play. When I tabletop game I like to make different characters that are as little like myself as possible (or rather, have a few traits which are very unlike myself). I like to think through how that character would act and react. The problem is that the more L you add to your RP the more like your character you, necessarily, have to be.
It's one of the reasons I'm wary when a GM says that negotiating, for instance, should be done by the player. This is all very well and good for somebody who's a good communicator, but what of the person who isn't but has made a character who is? All of those social stats become completely useless.
With LARPing, of course, you attempt to remove the dice rolling as much as possible which means that the player necessarily has to rely somewhat on his natural stats. So if it's a very talky kind of game then you need to be a very talky kind of person and if it's a very physical kind of game you need to be a very physical kind of person.
Of course, none of that's the reason I don't play. I don't play because it's on weekends and I fear that people might take themselves too seriously, something I do not do |

I would actually be interested in LARPing because I dunno if I'd enjoy it or not. The reason I didn't last year was because it was deffinatly intimidating, even when I was going round GameCon taking photos, I felt scared about approaching. But I think if you had a taster day for newbies and freshers I'd like to join in. _________________ The face is cute...the mind is evil ^-^ |

I find its easier if you Larp with a bunch of new players along with yourself and with people you are familiar and comfortable with Roll on AGS LARP DAY 09.
I play a very, very social character in IOD, and Its very hard when debating and soliciting to get my characters true abilities across, but I do well, Ed your characters are insane usually lol but I don't see a system of dice rolling for negotiations working well, unless its a debate, the Requiem for Rome rules look fantastic.
Anyway, Jen you should try once, never hurts. _________________

Most people do talk their way through a negotiation... however...
You can ask for a social challenge, on persuasion for example. If you win the challenge the other character has to go along with what you suggest, UNLESS it goes against their core ethics.
e.g. you can't talk someone into rape... Or even into sleeping with you, if the player says that is something his character would never do. This is where dominate and majesty step in - though be prepared for the repercussions! _________________ Mark Spinks

| I'd be more than willing to try LARPing out, my only concern is the rumoured extreme price tag that comes with it, buying costume and accessories etc. Is it easy to get in to? Or will I just fall on my face :p |

In the Isles of Darkness games, costume and accessories are not a requirement. Some players will develop a costume over time, and in the Dark Ages games, I award an additional point of XP of players who use costuming to aid the atmosphere of the game - this needn't be expensive though
There is an annual charge to be a member of IoD, currently set at £18, which is used to subsidise regional and national events and pay for posters, advertising and other essential requirements to a national society.
However, you can play for 3 months without being bugged about becoming a member - and again there are XP benefits to membership.
The first game in each venue is free, and after that time incurs a £1 charge. This is all filtered back into the local games, to pay for venues (when the university is unavailable), props and mood setting devices, and christmas parties (when there is enough in the kitty).

I'll get back to you after the weekend, unless Ian, John or Rannos want to help - I'm off to the Regional this weekend and I have lots of prep to finish tonight!!
Next game is on the 4th October and will be on campus - secretary willing!

As someone who came into the AGS pretty late on, I knew nothing about LARPing. I didn't know it was going on until I got pestered into it by Ranos
When I got there though everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful, explaining things.
What I would say is that people need to be encouraged into email lists to find out what is going on between courts and make sure they come back again. |

Everyone who leaves me their e-mail address gets invited onto the mailing lists
I think it's really important to send in a downtime, even if it's really short - as you are guaranteed a reply from the ST and most of the time this will include information and plot that you would not otherwise get.

For the more financially challenged yet interested people out there, a new website for the killer/assassin game is starting to run games in canterbury.
There is no need for costumes or stats or cards/dice. You might need to buy yourself a waterpistol or similar (you might already have one!) but then your set for life! There is a charge of £1 a month (or £5 for 6 months) but that covers you for atleast 2 games a month, gets the games organised and runs the site.
And if you don't feel active or extroverted enough to flour bomb a stranger in the street (most people don't!) just post them a "poisonous" rubber snake. They get "bitten" and "die", you never have to see them and you can get the snake back via the GM.
And there are rules put in place that it doesnt effect your normal lives, so you are safe at home and work, and you have to wear a badge (supplied) to show that you are playing and so you can see who else is playing too.
As the game fits around you, you can be whatever type of secret agent/assassin you like.
head over to www.canterburykillers.co.uk for details and to sign up! _________________ Isn't time you played a real game? |
